The Association Sportive de Monaco, a multisport society, was founded in 1924. The ASM Football Club then became the soccer branch of the great Monegasque club. During the 1924/1925 season the club took part in its first South East League match.

After their inaugural year in the world of professional soccer during the 1933/1934 season, ASM FC was forced to drop to the amateur level. In 1948, AS Monaco reacquired its professional status by returning to the French Second Division. In 1953 was promoted to the French First Division.

In 1960, AS Monaco and its legendary coach Lucien Leduc won their first professional trophy, the French Cup. The following year, Monaco became the French Champion for the first time of its history and, having won the French League Cup, qualified to play the European C2 the next year. Monaco won another French champion title in 1963 with coach Leduc and Chairman Antoine Romagnan.

In 2002/2003, the club finished second in the newly named Ligue 1, and won the League Cup at the Stade de France.

The 2003/2004 season was even more outstanding. Roma, Givet, Evra, Giuly, Rothen, Morientes, and the others defeated Lokomotiv Moscow, Real Madrid, and Chelsea and reached the final of the prestigious UEFA Champions League though unfortunately losing against FC Porto. The whole population of France supported the club on their unforgettable, epic journey.

After 26 years at the club, President Campora left in 2003. Pierre Svara from 2003 to 2004 and Michel Pastor from 2004 to 2008 took over the presidency. Then Jérôme de Bontin, on the board since 2002, was appointed president in April of 2008.
