The Philharmonic season begins every autumn and continues into the spring. In July and August, the orchestra plays in the Prince\'s Palace courtyard. The orchestra was founded in 1856 and gave its first concert on 14 December 1856, with an ensemble of 15 musicians. Today the orchestra is composed of eighty-six musicians and performs symphonic and lyric works. It also accompanies the ballet and opera productions. The orchestra has been conducted by some of the great conductors: Toscanini, Paul Paray, Edouard Van Remoortel, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Markovitch, Sir Neville Mariner, Walter Weller, Lawrence Foster and James Priest. International artists such as Rubinstein, Horowitz and Rostroprovitch have performed with the orchestra. The orchestra\'s recordings are known and sold throughout the world.  Be sure to add this highlight to your musical agenda. Tickets also go on sale at 4:00 PM before the performance at the Centre de Congres Auditorium (C.C.A.M.) which is behind and below (take the elevators) the Place du Casino. Any available tickets to Palace Courtyard concerts will be for sale at 7:30 PM the evening of the concert so it's wise to be first in line at the ticket booth on the Place du Palais.
