The Opéra de Monte-Carlo or Salle Garnier was built by the famous architect Charles Garnier as an exact replica in miniature of the Paris Opera House. It was inaugurated on January 25, 1879. The auditorium of the opera house is decorated in red and gold and has frescoes and sculptures all around the auditorium with twenty-eight ionic columns by Gustave Jundt. The ceiling of the auditorium is covered in high quality paintings. The interior of the opera, house is decorated with frescoes by Chabaud and on the ceiling, images representing instrumental music, comedy, dance and song. Sitting inside is like being inside a Faberge Egg, and one cannot help visualizing the past performances by all the great singers, dancers, and conductors who performed there.
Original works by Georges Bizet, Charles Gounod, Camille Saint Saens, "The Damnation of Faust" by Berlioz, "Don Quichote" by Jules Massenet, "L'Enfant et les Sortileges" by Ravel, and Puccini were premiered here. World-famous singers such as Enrico Caruso, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Julia Migenes and Barbara Hendricks have enchanted audiences in unforgettable performances.
