The Monte Carlo Ballet divides its time between Monaco and other cities around the world. They are in Monaco for Christmas, the spring arts festival and during part of the summer, they provide some dazzling evenings of dance on the terrace behind the Opera. Ballet started in Monte Carlo in 1911 when Impresario Serge de Diaghilev left Russia with the Russian Imperial Ballet and established his famous "Ballets Russes" in Monaco. The Salle Gamier has always been a pioneer in ballet with premiers of such famous ballets as "Le Spectre de la Rose," "Petruchka, and "Prelude a' 1'Apres-Midi d'un Faune." The world renowned artists Bakst, Benois, Picasso, Braque and Matisse created magical stage sets for Diaghilev and famous choreographers, among them Nijinsky, George Balanchine, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolph Nureyev and Maria Tallchief. The Monte Carlo Ballet is currently under the direction of Jean-Christophe Maillot, who has brought a new vitality to the ballet company. Look for an International Dance Forum to be staged in December in the Grimaldi Forum.
